It seems to be solved--it was the CAP virus infecting the Normal template,
as helpfully pointed out by Kippi Fagerlund. I couldn't get to the
suggested scan software but searched for "CAP virus" and found some other
stuff for free.

(It also probably doesn't hurt to delete the infected NORMAL.DOT, then
restart Word to re-create it, in order to have a clean version.)
