Regarding quality of work at Kinko's shops, I have
an experience to share. Skip to "my point" for
technical writing relevance.
I don't use Kinko's often simply because there is
not one in my town. However, about 4 months ago I
was in Oklahoma City and had to use Kinko's to
receive a long fax. While I waited, I had plenty
of time to observe other jobs.
One employee went over and above what had been asked
by the customer who wanted to blown-up copy of an
illustration from a library book. The employee was
very experienced, and he new the tricks needed to
do the best job possible for the customer, who was
very pleased.
Another customer brought in 2 pages she had printed
on a personal color printer. They contained services
provided by a beauty salon, and she wanted the pages
laminated. The Kinko's employee (much younger,
less experienced) laminated the pages, but put
the left page on the right and the right page on
the left. The customer complained and received a
discount.
My point: More difficult job = more experienced
employee assigned to job, but sometimes you get
the luck of the draw. Printing/binding jobs seem
to get more experienced employees.
