TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
This thread seems to have popped up again, or maybe I saw it previously in
CE-L. Anyway, here is what I think about jokes in indexes.
If you want me to write you off as being hopelessly unprofessional and not
worthy of consideration for future contracts, take the time to plug a cute
little joke into an index you do for me.
IMHO, an index is supposed to be a helpful tool for the document user.
Putting endless-loop jokes in the index is bound to irritate at least some
of the readers, making them less likely to purchase another product from the
producer. If you sabotage the company you contract to, you are biting the
hand that feeds you.
So endeth the sermon for today.
