The PostScript generated by my Windows NT box begins with the following
lines:
^[%-12345X -at- PJL SET PAGEPROTECT=AUTO
@PJL SET RESOLUTION=600
@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE=PCL

Is there anyway that I can painlessly and inexpensively (read: FREE) get
my Windows NT box to produce Adobe 3.0 PostScript?

As Bill Burns pointed out, you are using a PCL driver, not a PS driver.
PCL is HP's Page Composition Language. If your printer has a PS
interpreter, you need to install (on your PC, under NT) a PS driver for
that printer. You can use the generic PS driver that comes with
Windows, or the specific driver for the printer, but I recommend the
Adobe PS driver. It's available on the Adobe web site, and it is also
on the Acrobat 3.0 CD. It's fully compatible with Acrobat and all other
Adobe apps.
