TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
To the anonymous poster with job opportunity anxiety:
I think the question is not whether you can move back into a traditional
technical writing position, but whether or not you are suited to take
the opportunity presented to you. Not everyone is suited to take on the
challenges and responsibilities of the position you describe. It sounds
as if this position requires someone with an entrepreneurial spirit and
skillset to build not only a system but an organization to maintain that
system. If you are more comfortable with and better suited for the work
of a technical writer, look for a technical writing position that will
give you the opportunities you need to grow and be fulfilled. On the
other hand, if you are prepared and eager to broaden your skills and
lead people, then this job sounds like an incredible opportunity.
To sum up, don't take this new job just because you are unhappy with
your present position. From your expression of anxiety, I wonder if you
are unsure about your ability to pull of the responsibility of the new
position. If you're looking for an escape hatch before you take the job,
that's a red flag I'd advise you to heed.
