Here's some suggestions:
- Search the 'net using keywords or phrases like "market share" and
"install base."
- Search some of the magazine sites, like ZDNet, for articles on market
share or OS comparisons.
- Look at the web sites of the major OS and application manufacturers. They
may have information you're looking for, probably labeled with something
like "market share." Microsoft and Apple should have a pretty good idea of
their install bases, broken down by OS and even by application.
- Contact Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, etc., and ask them if they'll provide
you with that information.
