I used to see ads calling for a certain degree or "equivalent
experience." Does anybody still do that?

Tracy
who has a degree (in tech writing, no less) and thinks it makes her
neither a better nor a worse writer than someone who doesn't, although
it makes her a poorer writer (financially) because she's still paying
for the damn thing, and while it doesn't guarantee she has some specific
amount of "gumption" or "stick-to-it-iveness," it also doesn't guarantee
that someone who got a job without a degree has any more gumption than
she does, and she only gets to wear jeans on the occasional "jeans day,"
which happens to be coming up this Friday, and she once wore a suit to
an interview (bought at a decent price at a discount store because she
was still a student at the time but women's clothes are definitely more
expensive to dry clean, just ask any cleaner, and they are invariably
more cheaply made, just ask that dress-for-success guy or Consumer
Reports, so they don't last as long) only to find that the man
interviewing her was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt, which probably
didn't have to be dry cleaned, but even if they did it would cost less
than dry cleaning my jeans and flannel shirt (as if I'd do that!),
although lots of men around here take their jeans to the cleaners to get
that real serious starched crease that's so sharp you could cut a tomato
with it, much like a fine ginsu knife, and I think it looks goofy.
