Now, see, that's what I thought before my 27 interviews. I felt that I
demonstrated these qualities in my previous career as a professor of
Japanese--heck, as a grad student, I supported myself by giving talks
about Asia. I once taught myself to read and write the Korean
syllabary one night so I could give a talk on it the next day.

And in fact, I do feel that what John has described are the most
important skills for my current job. But I had a lot of trouble
getting hired because people wanted industry experience--just having
skills is not enough. Having multiple degrees in different disciplines
is not enough.
