As a damn yankee here in the wonderful land of AL, i was first
introduced to "fixin to...", "pitch a fit...", "richere" and of course
"y'all..." [which i freely use these days with that yankee accent] 6
years ago. there are some phrases that i hear on occasion that still
make me what was said. i have dropped the "you guys" and "youse guys"
entirely but have avoided a southern drawl most of the time. of course,
i tend to confuse the southerners here a tad due to being married into a
brit family for 3 years so "bloody well right", "bloody hell" and "not
bloody likely" sneak in frequently to keep company with the "ayuh", the
cah in the gayraj, and "not getting theah from heah". keeps them on
their toes while i try to figure out those few REALLY strange phrases i
hear occasionally [none of which i can remember now].
