The caveat about surgery is well placed. Everything that I have read
indicates that what you feel in your wrist and fingers is often
generated from really anywhere else in your spine and thorax. Surgery is
the last and desparate resort. I've been doing some reading and have
gotten useful information from: Repetitive Strain Injury: A computer
user's guide by Piscarelli, which has extensive details on setting up
your work station; Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrom, by Shron Buttler,
which provides a myriad of exercises and a methodology for doing them;
Low Stress Computing, by Ralph Strauch, available only from
www.somatic.com; Awareness Heals, by Shafarman, a book of Feldenkrais
exercises which are not addressed specifically to carpal tunnel but
which provide a framework for developing more efficient ways of using
muscles.

I can't explain why, but drinking lots of water really does help.
