A perfect example of your comment is this:

We lived in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, a 93% hispanic community. One
of our good friends had some of her children visit from El Paso. They
stayed a few days (great kids) and we really enjoyed meeting them.

After they left, Tilly mentioned to her one day that she was sorry that
Connie's *gang* had left, because we enjoyed having them around.

Connie was so incensed that Tilly referred to her children as a *gang* that
she never again spoke to Tilly, and told other residents in the RV park
that Tilly had insulted her.

No matter how much we tried to make Connie understand the affectionate term
*gang* she only knew one connotation and would not be swayed.
