I've used this in a roundabout way:
I type in
1. blah
2. blah
3. blah
Then I go back to 2. and undo the number toolbar button. It's important
that I create number 3 list before I eliminate 2. Why? it's Word
magic. (my euphemism for the one of multitudinous inexplicable Word
"features").

I'm running into the same thing. Could anyone who knows please tell me
too? Using SHIFT+ENTER is not really a viable option in my help files.
