Sorry Tracy,

I wasn't referring to Word's master document feature. I would avoid
using it as well. What I meant was to create a "main" document and
simply embed the text or chapters you want into that main document by
linking to them. You can insert a TOC and index and still pick up the
information from the sub documents you link to.

But Virginia sounds like she's got a good idea too!

Best Regards, Angela

Better yet, avoid Word's master document feature and use RD fields to
create your automated TOC. (In the file with the TOC, insert an RD
field for each chapter file preceding the TOC field.)

If you have a template, create chapter files with the template, and
copy text from the big file into the chapter file. If all styles are
contained in the big file, do a series of "save as" actions, and
delete everything but the chapter from each chapter file.

Regards, Virginia

Yes. Save the text you want to another file. Open up the master
document where you want to place the chapter. Click File from the
Insert menu, choose the file you want, then click the Link to File
check box.

You can work in each of the chapter as needed then update the links by
pressing F9. You can also maintain them by clicking Links from the
Edit menu.

If you turn the field codes on you can see the full path and file name
of the sub document you're linking to.

This won't mess up your TOC.

Hope this helps.

I have a hundred page document in Word 7.0 that is actually several =
other documents imported into one. Is there any way I can save sub =
documents for the chapters so the document would not be so cumbersome? =
And would doing this mess up my table of contents? I have used styles.

Thanks,

Tracy Taggart
