After a couple of bad experiences, I learned to ask probing, detailed
questions about the writing samples to determine if the applicant had in
fact written them. You would be surprised how many people admit, after
first offering up a sample as their own, that they had actually updated
only a few pages. Asking the detailed questions about the design and
organization of the document has two benefits: (1) you find out if they
have real knowledge of those areas, and (2) you find out if they were
the actual authors.
