The usual way of indexing this is to use "Journal" as a Primary Entry and
"Sales" and "Purchase" as Secondary Entries.
When you run your index generator, the resulting Index should show:
With the Secondary Entries indented below the Primary Entry.
How you get there, and whether you can use letter designations for each volume,
depends entirely on your index generating software.
You might get more specific answers if you would tell us which program you are
using to generate the index.
