Subject:Salary vs. Contract Rule of Thumb From:Michael Johnson <michaelj -at- OECMED -dot- COM> Date:Wed, 10 Jun 1998 14:40:49 -0600
Somebody from Silicon Valley (can't remember who) passed on the following rule of thumb at the STC Conference in Anaheim. It's for for writers who are thinking of moving from salaried to contract work:
To determine an appropriate initial hourly rate, divide your current annual salary by 1000; so if you're currently making $45K, you ought to ask for $45 an hour to do the same kind of work on contract.
