Most developers tend to view usability testing as one more hurdle to jump in
order to get to release on time. In selling usability testing, we go
straight to the marketing people and product managers. They are the ones
whose perceptions drive the target market dates. They are also the ones who
are used to paying for market research (of which usability is a specialized
kind). They have the research budgets. They have the power to delay a
release to "get it right."
They are the ones who will know if it is more important to hit the market
first or to hit it second with the right product.
I would advise any tech writer who wants to push usability to develop allies
in marketing. Where marketing goes, developers will follow.
