When I took my current job, I informed my boss very clearly and
diplomatically that I did freelance work on the side, including
forestry editing (my current job), and that so long as it didn't
interfere with my day job, I had no intention of accepting any
restrictions on that work. I also explained that I was fully
cognizant of the possibility of conflict of interest situations, and
would discuss them with him before accepting any work. I got hired
anyway, and would have looked elsewhere if it had been a problem. My
take on this is that full and open disclosure is always the way to
go. If you think you've got something to hide, that's often a good
sign that your conscience is bothering you and you should ask
yourself why. And if the boss won't let you live your own life
outside work, are you really sure you want to work there anyway?
