I grew up in Maine's largest city, Portland (pop. 70,000) (mind you that's the LARGEST city) Needless to say there isn't much high-tech work. There is alot of insurance and banking though. 
 
I'd suggest looking at the Boston job market and then make the 100 mile drive north when you want to visit.
