What? "Where East Meets West: Technical Communication and
Usability,"
When? 29-31 October 1998
Where? Hermes Softlab, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Come to beautiful Slovenia for an international conference. This
conference features 4 well-known speakers from the USA in the
professions of technical communication and usability. Those speakers are
Dr. Saul Carliner, Paula Berger, Dr. Ginny Redish and Dr. Evelyn
Williams, who will be presenting the following workshops.

In Technical Communication

* Writing to Communicate - basic tips and techniques for technical
writing
* Project management - tips and techniques for scheduling and
estimating projects
* Writing online information - which presents tips and techniques
for communicating online
* Writing for re-use, which explains how to write material so that
it can be used again (in another medium, for a different
purpose-including generic writing)

In Usability

* Building Usability into Your Documentation Process, which
includes
* Building the business case for usability
* Integrating usability with design and development
* Observing and listening to users
* Setting measurable usability goals
* Making use of what others have learned
* Evaluating drafts with users and making sense of the data
* Collecting User Requirements Data - Conducting visits to
customer sites, interviewing users, and observing user tasks in the
context of their work
* Making Use of Customer Data - Taking data from customer visits
and analysing it to identify user task requirements, user profiles, and
future task flow

These prominent four speakers will open the conference with a panel
discussion presented at INFOS, the main Slovene computer fair held each
year. They will talk about the history and future of technical
communication in the computer industry. This particular event is free
to the public.

In addition at the conference, presenters from many countries around the
