I called the Acrobat techies about this problem. It seems that Word has the
capability of smoothing out bitmapped graphics and rendering them nicely
both on-screen and for printing, even if they are 72-dpi, which most screen
captures are.
However, Acrobat lacks this capability. Hence any bitmaps that are less
than 300-dpi simply come out as garbage when distilled. Of course, you
didn't say that your graphics were screen captures, but if they are, the
answer is to get a screen capture tool such as ..... that can capture
screens at 300-dpi and above.
