Word has 2 types of styles: paragraph styles and character styles. Only one
paragraph style may be used per paragraph (ex. Heading1). However, each
character may have a different character style.

To create a character style for your Word 95 .doc or .dot:
1. Open the .doc/.dot in Word.
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S twice to display the Styles dialog box.
3. Click the New... button to display the New Style dialog box.
4. Select Character in the Style Type drop-down list.
5. Use your imagination and Word experience to finish creating the style...

(This procedure probably works about the same in other versions of Word.)
When you apply your new style to some fragment of a paragraph (i.e., select
some fragment of a paragraph, and then put the selected fragment in your
new character style), that fragment takes the new style, but the rest of
the paragraph retains the (default) paragraph style.
