If you need to do a simple conversion of a Word97 doc to HTML, Word can do
that for you. Simply select "Save as HTML" under the FILE menu, and Word
will present a dialog box where you can name the HTML file.
Word97 does some amazing things in this conversion. It will convert any
graphics in the document to GIFs, and does a darn good job of it, too.
Word tables are converted to HTML tables - fairly reliably.
Numbered and bulleted lists will convert to their equivalent in HTML except
when you have rather complicated lists or where you have a mixture of
numbered and bulleted lists. These always require some manipulation in your
HTML editor.
I use Word97 often to create quick documents, especially with tables, and
then "save as HTML." But I always have to go to my HTML editor to clean up
the file and do the final formatting.
If you're not too particular about final appearance of your document, Word
will do a pretty good job.
One thing you need to know: The formatting of a Word document (or any other
word-processing document) cannot be exactly reproduced in HTML. As another
listee mentioned, HTML Transit does a really good job, but it's expensive.
The only way to preserve fonts, spacing, and formatting is to convert to a
PDF document, using Acrobat.
