Well, one can *argue* anything, but it doesn't mean one will win. :-)
How could you copyright sports scores? You'd have to sue every newspaper
with a sports section, not to mention CNN and ESPN. Unless my copyright
knowledge is outdated, this company was pretty deluded. Of course, this
gets into the difference between copyright and plagiarism... facts can't
be protected by copyright, but if the company listed the height and
weight of every member of the (insert your favorite team), and you used
that info, you'd be committing plagiarism if you didn't give the source
credit, wouldn't you? I dunno. My head hurts.
