To determine what "advance against royalties" you should receive, ask
the publisher how many copies will be published in the first printing,
then multiply it by the royalty. A first printing of 5000 copies at a 5%
royalty on a $20 retail, for example, should be *about* $5,000. You
mileage may vary depending on whether you can negotiate a higher royalty
based on previous book sales or strong marketing opportunities (you can
do radio or newspaper interviews once the book is out). Also, of course,
academic publishers typically offer little or no advance. The advance
will be paid in three to five payments over the delivery schedule.

Get the highest royalty you can because 1)it gives you a stronger
commitment to an excellent book and 2) it gives the publisher a greater
need to market your book to recoup their investment.
