It seems that I have read and heard about some software packages that
'force' writers to work off a network server and automates the version
control and backup process. Has anyone used any of these packages? Which
ones are recommended? What features are important?

We are looking into version control, documentation control software that
would allow one writer to 'check out' a document at a time from a central
storage area. Any help would be appreciated.
