I bet you have experience and don't even know it.  Have you done any technical
writing projects for school?  If so, put them in a nice binder and create a
portfolio for yourself.  Put some examples of that work on the Web and let
interviewers know they can check out your stuff online...put your URL on your
resume.

If you don't have any projects from school, then make some up.  What kind of
technical writing do you want to do?  Brochures, newsletters, manuals, web
sites?  If you want to do brochures, then create a brochure for a non-profit
agency free of charge.  You will then have a sample to show potential employers.
You can create newsletters and web sites for non-profit agencies too.

If you are interested in writing manuals for a living, create one for your vcr
or your cell phone...or any other piece of equipment that may benefit from
having an instruction manual.

The point here is to have some work that potential employers can see.

I have a portfolio that started out with just school samples and its always put
me above and beyond the competition because I can SHOW what I am capable of
doing.

hello all

I am a university student and I am finding it hard to get a technical
writing job because i do not have any experience.  How am I supposed to
get experience if nobody will give me a chance?  Does anyone have any
suggestions?
