Microsoft has a product called Index Server that ships with NT Option Pack 4
and installs with IIS 4. It's a pretty simple product to use, but you need
to install it on NT Server (not Workstation) and it needs a pretty powerful
machine.

Index server indexes every file on your computer. You access it through an
HTML page that looks like every other search engine you've ever seen. You
can customize the HTML to return hits only from your selected directory.
You will see results as summary lines which you can expand in HTML to see
the entire file. You can also elect to open the entire document in Word
from the results page.

It's simple once you understand it, but Microsoft considers it unsupported
software so you won't find well written instructions on how to use it or
customize it. It ook me some time to understand it and set it up. However,
once I did, my company was impressed at my magic.

Does anyone out there know of software that will let you use the properties
of a word document in creating a database of word docs? I've just started
with a company and I'm trying to get a grasp on documents they have and I
was wondering if there were any applications that could help me automate
that.

If you know of anything, please let me know
