Also, for extra credit, can anyone point ot an authoritative source that
outlines the proper design in this area?

"The Windows Interface Guidelines for Software Design" (1995), page 144.
"You can also use a command button to display a pop-up menu. This convention
is known as a _menu button_. <snip> A menu button looks just like a standard
command button, except that, as a part of its label, it includes a
triangular arrow similar to the one found in cascading menu titles."

As for the proper design of the interface, that is another matter.
