Title: re: Senior Tech Writers

I do not have a Ph.D. in English, but I came to technical writing via
journalism.

I believe the difference everyone is talking about is the "knowing" that a
user's guide should be task oriented. It is "usability" and what the user
needs to do their job. Finally, it has to do with the "money" (or in
layperson's terms--big bucks) the company spends to produce the document.

At my previous employer, I saw a trend toward hiring English Ph.Ds. They had
a hard time with the learning curve, but because they are bright, they got
the hand of it.

Regardless of the level of a degree, I have a hard time with attitude. I
worked very hard to learn technology. I did not come to the industry
thinking I knew everything.

Bottomline--The proof of the pudding is in the end product and client
satisfaction.
