Subject:Headers for screen shots? From:Geoff Hart <Geoff-h -at- MTL -dot- FERIC -dot- CA> Date:Thu, 26 Aug 1999 12:44:38 -0400
Cirrus Matusek has <<... a screen capture and under each
screen capture I have a brief description (two to three
sentences) of the screen's functionality (what it's used for).
My audience consists of warehouse worker types as well as
corporate office types. For the header for the brief
description be "Screen Functionality" or "Purpose of Screen"
or something else?>>
None of the above: if it's a header, it belongs at the head of
the page, not hidden under the figure. Ah... you meant a
heading! <g>
I'm not convinced you need a heading to accompany the text,
but if you're going to choose one, I prefer something written
from the user's perspective rather than a generic, functional
description of the text. For example, one such heading might
be "Saving files" and the text that follows it says "This dialog
box lets you save files under their current name and location,
with a new name or location, or make backups of files."
"Perhaps there is something deep and profound behind all those sevens,
something just calling out for us to discover it. But I
suspect that it is only a pernicious, Pythagorean coincidence." George
Miller, "The Magical Number Seven" (1956)
