Assuming you're working in an X session in some way, have you looked for
any of the following:

* the gimp (Gnu Image Manipulation Program), which has a screenshot
feature, available at <http://www.gimp.org>.
* xv, John Bradley's excellent image grabber and editor, available at
<ftp://ftp.cis.upenn.edu/pub/xv>
* xwd, a bare-bones program for capturing X windows, usually included
with X11.

Hope some of this helps. There are undoubtedly others... perhaps people
will chime in with their favorites.
