As a technical writer/developer who has also worked for
Microsoft, I agree with you, Dawn. If I were not a guru VB
developer, then I have limited myself to writing about "those
easy to learn topics", and therefore, there's no need to attach
the "technical" word to my title. As a writer, I have the word-craft
tools I need to explain concepts clearly (i.e., language) , I have the tools
I need
(like Microsoft Word, ForeHelp, HTML, and so on) to put my words in a
digestible format, and I have the programming expertise (create
apps in VB and understanding issues like APIs, controls, object
oriented programming, etc.) to correctly classify myself as a technical
writer. Now, this also leads me to the title of teacher...but that's
another long story!

I am a Programmer/Writer for my contract agency. What that means
to them (and me) is that I have the expertise to write the
documentation for programmers (API documentation).
I understand the programmers and what they are talking about
because I have a programming background. I can write to that
specific audience, on the level they prefer.

It may be different for other companies, other cities.
