Acrobat Catalog (came as part of the Acrobat 3.0 package; I assume it is
also included in Acrobat 4.0) is the tool you want. Basically, you point
it to a directory and it constructs a full-text-search database. (The
controls allow you to exclude certain words. It also can be used to
search keyword entries that you store with each PDF file, dates,
authors, etc.)

Users must have the Search tool enabled in their readers, but you can
distribute this free with your software.
