Geoff's excellent response left out two bits of information which are
seemingly obvious, yet many people miss them:

* Acrobat has an option to compress files. Make sure it's on.
* Acrobat has options to compress the graphics. Use them too. If you're
using screen shots, stick with ZIP or LZW to keep it lossless.
