Joanne,

I have had the same discussion with a member of staff here who's wife is an
English and Music Major. Our compromise was to write two manuals, one my
way, the other his. We then asked a number of our users to read each manual
and comment. In many audience's the use of "you" is accepted and for those
who English is a second language appreciate. Try writing one of your
documents for a specific audience in both formats and then ask your peers
to comment, this should answer your own question.

For those interested, mine won. I no longer are questioned, just accepted
and appreciated. I even helped his wife write an English major paper on the
subject.

Best of Luck,
