I would look for some good examples. For example,
a classic is:

The C Programming Language
Kernighan and Ritchie
Prentice-Hall
ISBN 0-13-110370-9

It starts off with a simple tutorial chapter with
very simple examples and ends with the complete
language definition in a reference chapter. Something
for everyone.
