Breaking into the tech writing job market

I ran MS Word's spell checker and found out that my document is
currently at an 8th grade level. I'm documenting semiconductors and I
*know* a 12-year-old cannot comprehend it.

Perhaps folks are confusing "6th-grade level" and "cognitive
abilities of a 12-year-old". Many adults read at a lower grade level,
but that doesn't mean that their cognitive abilities are equivalent
to a 12-year-old's.
