For some people, yes. There could be lots of things that
someone considers more important to defining their
"quality of life" than a small mortgage or rent check, such
as access to world-class museums and opera, the ability
to look out one's living room window at the Pacific, etc.
The fact that you chose to write the big check for these
things and may not regret the decision doesn't make the
writing of the check less painful, even if that pain is short
term that will be repaid at retirement when the house is
sold for what you would have considered an absurd
amount of money when you bought it. Life is full of
tough choices, eh?
