Nearly the same thing occurred, successfully, in the market
for rack-mounted lab equipment about 50 years ago. There had
been a plethora of proprietary standards for required power
supply voltages and for (analog at that time) signal levels.
The US DOD said, "We're not buying anything that does not
meet [some particular] mil-spec standard." The manufacturers
quickly turned to making all their equipment match the
standard.

It sometimes helps to be a gorilla.
