I'm not interested in a religious war, but whether an authoring
environment is proprietary or not has very little bearing on whether
you have portable content. Rather, the design of your source and the
design of your use of that source defines its portability. True, there
are some proprietary tools out there that hold your content hostage,
but you have to buy into that arrangement (buyer beware). There are
plenty of proprietary tools out there that allow complete portability
of content, MS Word and FrameMaker included. If you don't believe it,
then you haven't done your homework. ;-)
