MS Word File Size Limitation

Several years ago I remember reading that MS Word had problems handling individual files that were larger than 20MB.  I was still able to create and effective work with master documents that could handle any number of sub-documents, as long as the total size of the files did not exceed the computer's available RAM.  Does anyone know of the current limitation of the size of individual files?
