Thanks very much to everyone who sent me ideas and help both on and
off list! This is a great list. I haven't actually gotten my digest
yet, so this may already be in there, but it turned out the the pdf
maker was a "disabled item" in Word. Here are the steps (courtesy of
Adobe) for fixing it. And, they worked! Note where this control is. I
NEVER would have found that on my own.
Solution 1: Remove Adobe PDF from the Disabled Items list in the
Microsoft Office application.
1. Open the Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, Publisher, or Excel).
2. Go to Help > About [ program name ].
3. Click Disabled Items.
4. Select Adobe PDF from the list and click Enable.
5. Quit the Microsoft Office program and then restart it.
