Some point-and-shooters who never use the advanced features
may never even learn all the basics.  These users may be packing
that basic manual with them everywhere they take the camera.
Owners who use the advanced features will probably be carting
the advanced manual around for a long time, and may or may
not memorise the basics.  Having two volumes allows owners
to carry only the information they need or all of it, without
having to pack along the parts they never use.

But the advanced manual is insufficient without a few pages of basic
information.  You still need to carry both manuals until you're familiar
with the camera, so why not put a summary of the basics in the advanced
manual?
