I love being a technical writer. I've missed programming since I had to
leave that field, and doing API documentation is the closest I can
reasonably get without having to learn C++ or some such. I get to work
with programmers, I get to dress comfortably, and I get to think and
learn and write all the time. Our product received lots of attention at
CES, so it seems the API will actually be used by paying customers Real
Soon Now. And since I have to understand something about all aspects of
the software architecture, the developers sometimes come to me for
big-picture input.
What could be better? It's like being 30 years old again, and beats my
former government-consulting job in every possible way except there
aren't enough salad-eaters for company at lunch. The guys always want
to go out to calorie-bomb places that don't even know how to spell
"salad" let alone have such a thing on their menus. They also insist on
talking about something called "World of Warcraft" a lot.
But I can deal.
Jessica
