I would avoid validators. 

Run the browsers instead, and remember not to slight your Linux customers,
so get a view from one of those machines as well.

I agree.

The proof is in the pudding.

If the page looks okay to a viewer in IE7 and Firefox - then good enough for
the interim.

Can then later go back later and fix 100% of the errors.

Even engineers work this way.
