Web design background goes back just as far and in my opinion, both Chris
and Mike are right. The Validator really helps identifying items you missed
during the design phase...such as alt text, etc., and it points out what is
needed if you're site is to be 508 compliant. However, you also need to
check out your website in multiple browsers and using different machines
(Mac, Windows, Linux, etc.)
"CSS, The Missing Manual," by David McFarland has a lot of great workarounds
for getting websites to work on IE5-7 and FireFox, Opera, etc.
