icons vs. buttons?

General principle:
If you can reduce wordcount without reducing meaning, it makes the
document faster for the reader to read, and therefore more
comprehensible.

In code, we're always seeking "n-1," or a program that with one fewer
lines of code does the same thing as its predecessor. I see no reason
why documentation, or even literature, should be different.
