icons vs. buttons?

Depends.

If there are other items on-screen, or more than one item with the same name
then qualifiers are required.

If not.

Click OK.

Not sure that's a consensus though.. ;-)

Let's assume the button does NOT have a thumbs-up icon. It just has the
letters "OK" on it.

Is it necessary to say "Click the OK button"?

Or is just "Click OK" acceptable?
