1,000-page documents (was Working with large documents in Word)

The aircraft industry routinely cranks out documentation for every
aircraft that weighs as much as a passenger.  However, if you look at
those binders you will find that most of them are compilations of many, 
many smaller separate documents (check corners of pages for P/Ns 
that change from chapter-to-chapter).  Maintaining these used to be
a real pain when everything was paper and updates for different
sections of the binders had to be manually inserted on a regular basis.
